Laptop not charging

Laptop (Dell Inspiron 1525) will not charge. Works when plugged in, but the battery never gets charged. when you hover the mouse over the power icon on the bottom right corner, it says "plugged in, not charging." trying to help a friend troubleshoot this. She says this problem happens about once a year and when it does, she gets new power cord (i dont think its OEM though). Any ideas? bad battery? bad port? just keep replacing power cord?

How old is the battery? Is the power cord getting pulled or yanked somehow? Although more expensive, I would go OEM this time. See if that makes the difference.

Service manual:

Documentation

It may need a new charger board. You can find them for about $20 on Ebay. To find it in the manual, it's a subassembly of the system board. Before ripping it apart, I'd get an OEM power cord.

computer was bought in 2008. she thinks she has replaced the battery once, but she isnt sure. I thought the aftermarket power cable might be the problem, but that wouldnt explain why the first one quite working.

OEM power cord did not fix it. When I type in "Dell 1525 charger board" into ebay I get items that all look a bit different. How do I know which one I need? Some have just power and USB, some have that plus Ethernet and VGA.

You have to open it up and get the part number off it.
