RAM upgrade in Lenovo ThinkPad T420
Hi Everyone,
I have a ThinkPad T420 with a SandyBridge Core i5. It has a single factory installed DDR3 1333 4 gig RAM module. I am looking to upgrade the laptop to 8 gigs for the added capacity and also to take advantage of the benefit of dual channel. I'll be honest I kindof jumped the gun a little bit and ordered a 2 x 4 gig set of Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600 for it last night because it was on sale plus a mail in rebate.....the RAM has shipped from Newegg already. Then I started doing a little more research... I've found some reports through Google searching that say the Core i5 memory controller is capped at DDR3 1333 and that only the Core i7's can utilize DDR3 1600.....other people say that the memory speed is limited only by the motherboard and that with right board any Core i3, i5, or i7 can utilize DDR3 1600. Does anyone know for sure if a Core i5 ThinkPad can run DDR3 1600, or will it just run the RAM at 1333? Secondly, I have also read some reviews of this laptop that say the factory installed RAM module is in a "user inaccessible" slot. Does this mean just harder to get to, like underneath the keyboard, or is it really impossible to replace the factory installed module? I figure the Kingston HyperX is probably higher quality than what's in there now, so I'd really like to be able to replace it. Sorry for such a long post :-x Thanks! -Ed

1600 should work, but it will only run at 1333.

Lenovo and Dell generally have service manuals available for download. Other brands, not so much.

T420 ram
This thread is one of the top results on google when searching for T420 and RAM. I'd like to point out that while the intel website lists the i7 2640m as supporting only 1066/1333 that I am currently running DDR3 1600 at full speed. I've verified this with CPU-Z and with MaxxMEM2. I can't say the same for the i5, but if the OP could jump back in and say if it worked or not, I'm sure a lot of T420 owners would appreciate it.
TL;DR: T420 i7 2640m works with DDR3 1600mhz. Intel® Core |
