what to look for in a laptop

Hi there

I am looking to buy a laptop for home. pretty much for basic use, internet, office, family photos/videos

there are so many options out there I don't know where to start really and I noticed the "laptop buying guide" sticky is broken

looking to run windows 7 home 64 still not sure on 15.6 or 17" display although I imagine the battery life drops drastically between the two

sorry about that oversight

looking in the 400-700 range as from surfing around the laptops in this range seem to fit my needs but I don't know what to look for quality wise.

always been a desktop guy so I had control over all my hardware so laptops intimidate me a little

The only Windows laptop I'd buy would be an Asus. Some other people swear by Dell, and they're not bad (when they work, which is most of the time, but if you get the occasional dud, customer service is a crapshoot).

Bought one for my son for Christmas. It is very light and extremely well made. The graphics and monitor are incredible. I bought mine direct for about the same price.
