Cheap laptop ?

My wife does medical transcription from home and would like to get a laptop for a backup if her desktop ever decided to take a poop on her..

She uses word, internet, yahoo messenger and a program called webchartMD also would have e-mail and internet pages running all at the same time..

Since this will basically be a backup PC and not for gaming or anything else,Do you feel some of the $300ish laptops would suffice? and if so what brands to look for?

We have never owned a laptop before and are basically clueless about them.

Thanks in advance.

Dale

I think a lease turn laptop from IBM would do the trick. Any from the list should be good. Some say slightly blemished but I have never had any issues with them. they are dependable and durable.

IBM Products and services - Used laptops — certified by IBM - United States

This one is a great deal and it is new but slightly blemished, probably a scratch on the case... it is 287.00 with a 1 year extended warranty. Jump on it!

jdeb? Or anyone else for that matter...

We bought that lenovo you suggested for $287 and it works just fine..Thanks..

Just 1 problem that i cannot figure out, how to wake it back up.fn+f4 puts it to sleep no problem but I cannot get it to wake up for the life of me without doing a hard shut down then rebooting..
Like i said in the OP I know nothing about laptops so my question is..

Do laptops wake up different than a desktop?

Google search is failing me on this..Except i have found others have the same problem but no fix??

Lenovo thinkpad R400,win XP pro

Thanks in advance for any ideas..

Have you read the manual on the power settings? You can download the manual (hardware maintenance manual) from the Lenovo website. Look under the power management section in the manual.

If I recall correctly or at least my Lenovo, fn+f4 put the laptop in standby mode. Simply opening the lid, pressing the fn key, or pressing the power button will resume or get it out of standby mode.

Just curious. Was it almost like new condition?

Check your settings in the think vantage power management settings and make sure they correspond with the correct key combo's.
