Laptop suggestions
Hi All,
I need help on a laptop for Christmas, $600 range, 14-15" screen. I was looking at Asus, Dell, Sony or Toshiba. Please rate these for dependability and durability. It will be used mostly for internet. Any ideas and help would be appreciated. Thanks, |

I've always had good luck with the Dell Inspiron's. Have owned three different models and have not experienced any technical issues, but I always buy the 17" which will cost more.

Lenovo - Essential G470 14" laptop
I just bought my mom the G470 with the I5 processor, its now $569 but I got it for $480 on Black Friday. Its a nice little computer and I am really pleased with the build quality and speed of it.

ASUS A53-series
Even though I've only bought DELL laptops for the last six years or so, I recently made an exception. I ordered an ASUS A53E-EH1 a few weeks ago as a Christmas present for my nephew. Newegg had it on sale for $299 (regularly $449) for less than an hour, which was too good to pass up.
I expected it to be a basic, plain-looking laptop with adequate performance- nothing more. But I was BLOWN AWAY by the design and overall build quality when I received it! The lid has a tasteful glossy finish and the entire laptop feels very solid. The palm rest and keyboard surround is real aluminum, which gives it the look of a machine costing 3x as much. The 15.6" display is also the best I've seen on any sub-$700 laptop- very bright, evenly lit, good color representation. Even with the entry-level Pentium B950 processor, performance is very good even when multi-tasking. With a Core i3/i5 found in some other A53E configurations, it would be even better.... One other great perk- ASUS includes 1-year Accidental Damage Coverage in addition to the regular 1-year Warranty. I highly recommend it!
