is it possible to-----------

my location features a community wide wifi network.

The signal as received in my apartment is very weak (circa 95 dbm)

My Kindle shows "i bar out of 5" signal strength= very weak/cnt connect

is there any way to boost the incoming signal to a useable strngth to operate the wifi aspect of the kindle? Kindle has only a micro usb connector..no other ports.

i see "network extenders" which plug into the ac mains-but wonder if such a device wld work for the kindle?

thanks.

would a wifi range extender do the job??

Netgear makes two-each sells for about $70

they claim useful for ipads/smartphones..wonder if it would boost the weak incoming wifi signal (about 95 dbm) to a useable level for the kindle??

The router would need a more directional antenna. The downside is that in some places the signal will be weaker.

The AC line network hardware is notorious for being slow.

Is there any way to hardware this?

There are also WiFi bridges/repeaters which effectively allow you to daisy chain a WiFi signal in order to increase its range towards your computer.

think i might try one of these device--will make sure it's returnable if doesnt work!

they r relatively cheap-so what can i lose..IF returnable!

have both a cheap tablet and the kindle--will see if the "network extender" works on either/both.

ps---the tablet is an "el cheepo"..$80 for anm android 2.2/1ghz chip/4gb ram..works fair..screen is somewhat dim; requires alot of pressure to activate the icons..but..for the $$ is ok---the wifi receiver isnt the greatest..my old htc vx6700 phone will work with very weak wifi signal vs the tablet will not..oh we..get what u pat for..................

Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, Networking, Bridge Repeater

does these have to be configured to a particular router--or--will they amplify and repeat ANY received wifi signal?

I don't know the specifics. I only know how they work from the product descriptions. This is a good glc question....if he ever gets back home.

I am going to guess here and assume they will detect any WiFi signal, create a list of detected signals and then you select which signal you want to daisy chain off of. But that is all you need, right?

If you have the time, I would wait for a recommendation from glc. He's da Man.

ok!!!

a not so knowledgeable (i suspect) salesman said these extenders have to be configured for a particular router--ie---they will not amplify "any incoming" wifi signal.

as i do not know the configuration for the incoming wifi signal--these extenders may not work..

awaiting glc

If you know the SSID, security type/key, and IP address of the router, you should be able to configure an extender/repeater.

dont have this info--i guess all such extenders require this data?

If i could fir an external antenna to the tablet/kindle--would work..but the external antennas all use sma connectors vs the kindle/tablets use micro usb jacks..

if i ould purchase a sma to micro usb adapter..would work!

How did you configure your existing wireless adapters without that information? You definitely need the SSID and security (if there is any) to do that, and getting the IP address is easy, just open a command prompt and type ipconfig/all and it will be the default gateway address.

this is an "open" network accessible without need to input this type data.

i hooked up the "alfa" long range extender (to my desktop) and it worked!

trying to figure if it (or another type) "extender" can work similarly with my tablet/kindle.

If I could attach an exrternal wifi antenna to tablet/kindl;e--would work-as there is a weak signal present (1 out of 4 bars on signal strength indicator icon)

I have external wifi antennas--trouble is----they are "sma male"..vs..kindle/tablet input(s) is (are) "micro sd"...and..am not sure these micro socets would link external antenna to the wifi radio within these devices??

thanx.

looks likeim "stuck" using "extenders" with either my "regular" notebook or desktop.

Wld be great IF I somehow could use an extender an/or external antenna with the tablet/kindle..
Would be grerat IF I could use

An extender/repeater should be able to feed multiple devices with no need for additional antennas. It just sits there, receives the weak signal, and retransmits it.

This device may be what you need - it looks like all you have to do is press the button for 5 seconds and it configures itself.

Newegg.com - TP-LINK TL-WA730RE Wireless N Range Extender Up to 150Mbps/ One Setup Button with WPA/WPA2/WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK Encryption

Betcha it might work if you try putting it in a different location in your apartment - or upgrade the antennas to higher gain models.

I agree with trying a higher gain directional antenna.

Played around with mifi2200 settings and got it to work with the nook!!...barnes and noble very nicely will let me exchange the nook color for a nook tablet. Tablet features a much faster 1ghz dual core cpu which is much faster..a exchange will only cost $50..is well worth it..doubt a better tablet available for $200 unless go used which dont trust..a samsubg galaxy is available for $200 but think ill go for the new nook tablet for same price

I do have an alfa hi gain amp..antenna device..but no way to couple to the nook.

i have a hi gain antenna connected to the alpha

it raises a "one bar" wifi signal to 3-4 bars....

if only i cld connect the alfa to the nook!!

the alfa connects via a full size usb connetor-and-requires software installation.

What happened to the TP-LINK extender??????

You don't connect that to ANYTHING - you plug it in to AC power and push the range extender button. It just sits there!
