Tablet Virus Protection needed ?

I was not sure where to post this thread but decided that tablets may be considered computer hardware, I suppose.

I just purchased an Asus TF300 tablet and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with virus protection software for these devices. It seems like a must to have it but there appear to be quite a few choices and it is not clear which protection would be best or if it is needed at all. Can I get some comments on this please ?

According to Leo Laporte and a few others I listen to, it is not necessary for the iPad.

I haven't felt the need to install AV on either my Android phone or tablet. My take is that actual viruses are rare and most people that run into problems are nailed by trojans.

AV is not needed for Android either, as Android apps are run in Java virtual machines, not at the kernel level. Java VMs work in the same way others do, in that they keep things out of the main ecosystem of the device.

I'm using Avast on my android smartphone as well.

If it's not a good idea for a computer to be on the internet without AV protection, it's certainly not a good idea for a roaming device to be without any sort of protection.

Smartphones and tablets are especially suseptable trojans that sneak in during an app installation, from what I've seen so far.

I just got rid of Avast and replaced it with Lookout. Avast was slowing my mobile browser down to a crawl.
