Ancient Egyption
Hello folks,
I like to learn new things including languages. I would now like to check out the tounges of Ancient Egypt. I found a few sites but little "hard bound" data. Anyone out there suggest reading material? I hear of 3 differing but fundimentally the same "tounges" from the first through the 3rd dynasty. My interest is during the era of the great Pharoes of ancient Egypt and hyrogliphics. (poorly spelled?) Anyone out there in PC-Mech land offer any ideas? My local library is of no real help.

I have done research into that myself and unfortunately the spoken language is all but lost to us. Try Yahoo or altivista.

Just do a search. Also, I thought there were only two dialects: upper and lower from the Rosetta Stone which had Greek and two dialects of the same message.

Toaster: Just wondering, but why ancient Egyption? Any specific reason? Why not Greek or Latin or some other equally ancient yet more popular (to learn, that is) language?

Hello folks,
A friend sent me a note that was nothing but symbols. I derived that it is Ancient Egyptian and possibly from the 7th dynasty. I would simply like to have a working knowlege. I found some stuff that my local library borrowed from another library. I can make heads or toes from the message and now I need to "counterattack" my friend with something. Still, I find the language well structured what I can get to know of but there is very little data. I'm aware that these old languages have no real merit in todays languages but still a language thats written with symbols and words. Anyhoo, thanks folks. |

Thanks for the links, they should prove useful.
While the written language is defunct, I find the spoken language to be interesting. Thanks again. |
