I am going to let everyone talk about what we can do about things like this and later I will add me 2 cents.... ------------------ byte@pcmech.com Computer Bash 2000 Join today. Alf Hunters of PCMECH how much AMD stock do you own today? AMD's Greenagel said it is the competition that is revealing Intel's vulnerability. "I'm sure Intel has had problems in the past," Greenagel said. "They've never been visible because they haven't had anyone nipping at their heels." |

What can we do about it? Probably nothing. Some might say send nukes, but would we have the preparation time to totally obliterate it so that we don't get a meteor shower that would be just as devastating? Worse yet, should the world be put in a panic over a rock 3 million miles away? I don't think so.

Yeah, really who cares? Besides, we've got Bruce Willis and his crew of drillers that are sitting on an oil rig ready to saddle up on the Space Shuttle to go mine and bomb any asteroids that might be heading straight towards earth...

Do about it? Well, we could shield ourself from the blast by placing our head between our knees and kissing our a$$ bye bye.
Now what about this..... A large comet that strikes the moon and showers our earth with moon dust the size of volkswagons. We`ll all be ringside.... |

I don't know about you Toaster, but I would rather be knocked out as a chunk of rock hits me in the head instead of having a flaming projectile rammed up my a$$ as it points toward the sky to be kissed.

Lets be serious for a moment. It is generally thought that every few 100,000 years, asteroids larger than a mile dia, will collide with the planet.Cometary collisions are even rarer, so perhaps this so called near miss is nothing to worry about.Asteroids originally brought to the Earth the carbon based molecules and volatile matter that led to the evolution of humans. It is also thought that an asteroid collision brought about the extinction of dinosaurs by changing the climate.
However, since asteroids and comets are the debris from the formation of stars, it is possible that in the future a very large chunk could collide with Earth. The problem is what would the governments of the world do to stop the collision. It would be up to the technically advanced nations to formulate a plan, but I can immediately see a political problem, resulting in procrastination. For example China would accuse the West of inventing the whole thing as an excuse to increase their nuclear stockpiles, while other governments of smaller nations would sit back and wait to be saved. The end result,I fear, would be that nothing would be done until it was too late. The answer would be to hand the whole project to a multinational team of Scientists, and to lock up all politicians until their necks were saved. |
