I have wondered how most folks would "describe" a friendship. I tend to think that this varies by a great deal. I for one value this above all else, even my own personal safety. There are things a true friend wont ask of a frienship or put before a friendship. What are your views folks?

I consider a true friend to be a person that I look forward to spending time with, that I would do almost anything for, and that I can call upon to talk during times of sadness or anger.

My best friend (other than my wife) would never rat me out nor would I rat him out (no matter what the circumstances). He would give me the shirt off his back if I asked for it as would I if he asked.

A true friend is hard to find, and when you do find one... you have a treasure.

That is basicly my views. A treasure of advice, of support and the ever useful point of view that may differ from ones own. True friends are hard to find and rare, this would be the reason I have only 3 "true" friends.

To me, a true friend is a person for whom we would gladly sacrafice our own self interest. The vast majority of what people call friends are just good acquaintences. True friends are rare and far between, but once found are there for life.

She stands next to me when I need a shoulder to lean on
She stands behind me when I need a push to get through life
She stands in front of me while I'm watching TV...

That's right...the lady of my life.

Jenny (as referred to above “she”) is originally from Virginia and can't stand Wisconsin from November to March...I doubt she'd wanna go any further north.

One of the three best friends I have, had a drinking problem. He had this uncanny way to annoy someone when he was drunk. On evening, he annoyed the wrong person who came at him with a club. I asked that this person forgive my friend because he was drunk but he insisted that he wanted to do harm and draw blood. He lunged with club in hand toward my friend who was barely able to stand let alone defend himself. I got between the 2 and took the blow.
I awoke 4 days later with my sobbing friend at my bedside.
The attacker payed all medical bills and was arrested on an assult to commit manslaughter. My friend never drank again.
This was 20 years ago. His attitude has changed markedly when he realized how dangerous his attitude was to those around him. He now councils others with drinking/drug problems. He became a psycoanalyst and now averts many others personal problems.

Hello,

To me a friend is a person who accepts you for who you are and not because what you have, a person who corrects you when you are wrong and shares with you your good moments, as well the bad ones. That's what I think a friendship means.

Yeah, well, those are all good definitions of what a friend should be, seemingly out of a romantic novel. I've had many acquaintances in my years; some at the time I actually considered friend. Shared some periods with others who were just as scared as I. Hugged with them, prayed with them and cried with them. It was a definite point in time when circumstances draw folks close, about as close as you can get. Those circumstances end, people go separate ways, and you realize it was a convenient mirage. I believe we all have acquaintances and choose to call some friends, based on our security with them. We can tell them to **** off without really meaning it, and they know it. Eventually we all go our separate ways.
