Naturally, Java and C++ are usually both learned because they are similar -p both C based syntax. I would go C++.

I would go C++ first...it's a natural step from Java as I mentioned. However, VB isn't far away and you can probably see it coming after C++.

Visual Basic is a pretty easy step-up, but definitely do C++ first... our university actually sets our degree so that we start on MATLAB, go to Java, move to C++, and then leaves us to learn whatever we want with the basics we've learnt. Most of us learn Visual Basic to do extra stuff on for our degree

I did some visual basic stuff before i started java. I didn't like it at all. Maybe i just didn't learn enough for it to be intersting but it wans't to impressive at all. I liked java a lot though and i'm thinking about getting a C++ book this summer. Just like what you are thinking about.
