reliable webhost

I've been using a cheap host for my personal website for around 10 months now, the service used to be great, no long downtimes, and support requests are usually answered within a day, until recently, server started to go down too often, don't know if it will keep so or not, but I've decided to switch to a reliable host, and free my mind.

What I'm looking for is advice out of personal experience with uptime and support, I don't mind paying much any more, I just want something that truly stays up 99% of the time, and has quick support responses.

As for what I need: Linux hosting, PHP/MySQL, at least 150MB space, 5GB bandwidth, FTP, a good number of email accounts and databases (I can live with 5 each), SSH access would be nice, I prefer cPanel for controlling the server, the ability to park/add-on some domains or use subdomains would be nice too.

I know info is all over the web, and I can already find all kinds of hosting plans that suit my needs, but I want to hear PC Mech members experiences about webhosting

TIA

I've often said it before, and appended it with a thanx (again) to Mairving for suggesting it to me over 3 years ago : hostmatters.com is an exceptional hosting company in my experience.
Great support response, great response to threats, great uptime

No doubt. Yesterday, they had a DOS (Denial Of Service) attack against them so their sites were down. Not much that you can do about a DOS attack but they were able to quickly isolate monitor and correct the problem.

Aym_7, who are you with now? It seems like you were with HM at one time.

Thanks for the suggestions guys

Actually I've seen HM quite often while searching the forums, and no I've never hosted anything there before, I'm using P4Host now, don't get me wrong here, P4Host provides great services for what I pay, the problem is, with such low prices, they can't quickly handle support requests, or upgrade the servers very often.

HM's B1000 plan looks great for what I need, just a couple of questions: Do they provide IMAP/SSH? What about the control panel? Is it cPanel or something else?

EDIT:
Hmm, searching their forums, looks like they have cPanel, IMAP, and SSH.
HM it is, I think I'll place my order in the next few days.

Thanks again everyone

I've been with Totalchoice Hosting since The Dawn of Man (2002, I think). I use it as my personal website. I'm so happy with their service and price that they have earned a place in my signature.

-Cost-effective prices
-Tons of extras
-Civilized, high-quality & friendly online community (comparable to PCMech --> http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/forums/)
-Reliable service/uptime
-FAST & knowledgeable staff.

I transferred the website of the small company I used to work for (back in college). It was one of the best changes I made in that place.

I think they have an IRC channel if you have any questions. You can also stop by the forums. You'll get a reply to your post as fast you get a reply in PCMech.

And no, I'm not affiliated with them nor do I get any financial reward for steering business to them. I'm just one of their satisfied customers

Thanks for the suggestion, looks interesting, I'll sure consider it when I need something close to their plans.

punked out comp:
You need to look at the number of addon domains (which is the number of additional domains that can be hosted), the power plan offers 1 addon domain for example, which means you can host another domain in addition to the main one.

If you're not sure yet if you want to have a long term website and just want to try it out, 1and1.com has a free trial of one of their packages for six months going on right now. 2GB storage and 50 GB/month bandwidth.

Seeing as how this thread is 1-1/2 years old, I am hoping that the original poster has already found a web host. Any more replies need to go into this thread.
