Web Hosting Q & A
Alright guys, I thought I would make a thread where all your questions about web hosting could be answered. There have been a number of you asking about the best pay host, the best free host, and home hosted servers lately, and I figured you might like to have a central source of info.
For pay servers, I've had personal experience with http://www.hostvector.com and they are great - their uptime is unmatched in my experience, and they keep their fantastico suite up to date. Their support is decent, usually takes them a few hours though. Many around here recommend http://www.surpasshosting.com and for the price, they can't be beat. They've got good support from what i've seen. For free servers, I personally like geocities from yahoo, but there are many others. If you want to host your own server, check out my article on http://www.pcmech.com/show/network/690 and if you have any questions about it, post below or drop me an email. Feel free to add to the list good and bad hosts, just post below. Thanks, TT

Hey TT, good post.
I also want to add that my friend who owned a gaming website had some very nice experiences with Powweb. For domain, Go Daddy has low rates. kram

I know you can probably find cheaper, but I use www.oneandone.co.uk I have never had a problem with downtime, my server has always been up. I am also happy with the upgrades that have occured, when I started out I only got 1Gb of space, and now I have 2.5Gb (bandwidth email etc has also had similar upgrades.) I have never had to deal with their support, so I don't know what it is like, I have found that their FAQ contains all the info that I have needed.
Edit: I just looked again, and the specs have been upgraded again. I am not sure what they will do if I fill up all 700 1Gb email inboxes though, that is a lot of storage needed. Last edited by WhatsThisBoxFor?; 01-12-2005 at 10:40 AM. |

I have been hosting on midphase.com for about 2 years now. Great for messageboard sites and high traffic sites because of the unmetered bandwidth. Have only contacted customer support once and they replied in under an hour. My overall experience with them has been great.

A webserver I used for a few months was the KeyFocus Web Server from http://www.keyfocus.net/kfws/ It let me add php and perl to it easily. And the F.A.Q. helps explain about how to do most things on it. It caught all attacks as far as I tell.

Just go to www.freewebspace.net sign up on the forums, post what you want, and everyone will come running to give it to you. Cpanel controls (awsome), Gig or 10 of space, and about 20Gigs of BW if ur lucky. Standard is 100MB of space and 1-15Gigs of BW. So go there its sweet. Heck maybe even I will grant you hosting wishes (Holds sign above head screaming my FFRHosting company).
![]() As soon as we are done with server move anyways.
