Developing a Search Engine

Hey guys I wolud like to tell you first that this search engine will not be for profit purposes but just a Thesis in my College.

What are the required hardware components and PL(programming languages) that can be used. Do I need to setup a server?

It will not be like Yahoo or Google with email services. But just a simple search engine where you can search and read local news and local weather.

You will need to set up / use a server that has a MySQL database on it, and use PHP / MySQL to write the software. If you need more info, let met know.

Thanks man, Is this the simplest way to do it or there are other ways? How will I update the database? I don't know how to use MySQL. I only know how to use Microsoft SQL Server 2000? Can I use ASP.NET instead of PHP? How about ColdFusion for the database?

hmm.... ASP.NET will be fine for interacting with the DB (you will update it through an application you would have to make in ASP, or do it from PHPmyADMIN, if you have PHP access {no php knowledge required}). I know nothing about coldfusion - i'll leave that to someone else to answer.... HTH

Thank you for a quick reply man.

I want to learn PHP and MySQL. I read something interesting and it really caught my attention and planning to learn and do my Thesis with it. I never had developed a website with an online database. But I've been planning for it for a long time. And I think PHP/MySQL is the best way to start for me. My future career is focused on web/software development.

What are the steps to do. What softwares to install. Where? How do I setup my server?

TAThompson407 on aim
admin@derbydigital.com on msn
Yahoo i'm not on right now, but i'll use it as a last resort.

This way I can help you more effectively. Thanks,
TT
