To make flash buttons you need Macromedia Flash (which is expensive) and the only alternative I know of was a project called Flash 4 Linux, but the last time I checked it was in a alpha stage and not usable.

To modify the flashbuttons.com buttons you can download the source files from http://www.flashbuttons.com/opsButtons.php but you need Flash to open them.

You might be able to make buttons in Java, but I do not think they will be like flash buttons.

Dreamweaver can make flash buttons.

That said, I think they're a very bad idea. Some people don't have flash or don't want it. People like me use Firefox's flashblock to disable all flash objects and replace them with a play button we can click to enable them. They have extra file size. And finally, you can accomplish many of the same things with rollover images in Javascript or CSS.

One frequently overlooked rule of web design, is that a flashy website is not necesarily a better website. In fact, flashy designs IMHO are usually harder on the eye, more difficult to quickly view and digest, and a strain on bandwidth.

Incidentally I think you could do most of that in Java as well, but similar arguments apply for why it's a bad reason.

Linking to a button

Yes I can make a button but I do not know how to link from it, I will show you what I am trying to do with the html that I have so far. BRB

Show me the Odyssey Chart
The above works without a button

davis.pdf" target="blank"> Show me the Odyssey Chart
The above works without a button (the a href = left off to show the code)

The above makes the button but does not link the pdf file to the button. I know it must be simple but I can not figure it out so far.

davis.pdf" target="blank" input type="submit" value = "Show me the Odyssey Chart"> (the a href = left off to show the code)

Wow I would really appreciate the help!

ok.. dreamweaver is too confusing.... Whatsthisboxfor, the website you provided, i chose one of the buttons from there, the one that says 'alphao,' the 17th button on there. I got it into ms frontpage, but how do i make it say Home instead of alphao?.

Another problem is that i chose one of the templates fomr MS frontpage and i want to provide a border into the template. Meaning, that lets say it gives a blue shade at the rite side, i want to put a border over it, like a design, but the problem is that, when i put it on the blue shade, the design shows up in a white box. Meaning you can see a white box around the design over the blue shade, and this looks horrible. What can i do so that the design appears without the white box?

-thanks.

OK - to edit the file download the zip file (which you should have already done). Then open the button17.fla file in Flash Mx. In the middle of the stage you will see what the button looks like at the start, and double click it. In the timeline at the top there should be a whole load of layers, such as Livello3, this is where different parts of the buttons are. Also, you have the different events for when the user interacts with the button - Up, over, down etc. In the frames under these headings is what is displayed when that happens. If you click in one of the frames under Over then you should see the text, double click it and you should be able to edit it. Press CTRL-Enter to preview it.

If you want to make you own buttons it is a very similar process and I can explain if you want.

To get the button into frontpage (or Dreamweaver, which I prefere to frontpage but can only use at school) in Flash click in the grey bit on the stage, in the properties box at the bottom it should say settings - click it. Then click publish and it will make a file called button17.swf (or whatever you call it) which you can use in a webpage.

The design you are putting on the border - what is it? I am guessing it is a picture, if it is then I think you need to make it a gif with a transparent background, or make the background the blue shade and it should then match the border.
