I am interested in a career in web design and was wondering if any of you knew how to prepare for that. I am only beginning high school, but I guess it's never to early to start. I know a lot of and about the different language (XHTML, PHP, CSS, etc.), but I was wondering if there is anything I should do now to get ready.
Thanks!

My recommendation is to get yourself acquainted with Macromedia Flash and Adobe Photoshop - two important softwares used most often for web designing, the latter more important than the former. Go to your nearest bookstore and grab a webdesign book - they teach you the general techniques (shaping curves, making navigations, etc) of web designing. After that, it'll only be time until experience sinks in.
Best of luck. kram

I was wondering if there are any high-school courses I should take. I know you mentioned Web classes, but I also wondering what math classes and such I should take. Thanks!

As for high school courses - check your HS to see if there is a digital photography course offered. Being acquainted in Photoshop is crucial to being a good web designer - digital photo will teach you that. kram |

Anyway....
What programs should I get? I have Photoshop 6, Flash 5, (I know, I know, old versions), and Dev-PHP (forget which version, Alpha 1c?). Anything else I might want to get a hold of? |

As such, some software needed to create basic websites might include but is not restricted to: Macromedia Dreamweaver, TextPad, WS_FTP Pro (or any FTP Program). Hope that helps, kram |

I already know how to code I have created a few websites (most of which failed due to lack of visitors) and I have learned all the from the Visual Quickstart Guides (good books). Also, I hate WYSIWYG editors. I think it takes the fun out the web design, I like to code, which I do with the Dev-PHP program (.http://devphp.sourceforge.net/). Its better than a plain old text editor, it has text highlighting, class-browsing, etc.
Of the programs, I have Dev-PHP (for coding), Photoshop 6.0, FileZilla (FTP), Flash 5, and some audio programs if the need should arise. Anything else? |

What do you think the best forum software is? I know this is kind of an unrelated question (maybe not), but it might apply to a web design career. I have used a few: phpBB, InvisionBoard, and vBulletin. All very similar, but what do you think would be a good one to look professional with but have a low cost. Thanks!

I have tried phpBB, but I always have trouble setting it up. Just getting it to work and then changing themes and whatnot. My webhost is supposed to have an easy way to set it up, but it never works. I should see about making them get it to work. It always seems to work on every account but mine. One program was Fantastico and the other is somethine included with Ensim. Anyway, I will try to get phpBB to work. It is a nice forum software. Do you know how much vBulletin is?

The price of vBulletin is on their website. Of the top of my head, it was about $80 for a 1 year license, and $160 for a permanent license.
I found phpbb very easy to set up, but some of my friends had unexplained issues setting it up. The crucial thing is to get all of your setup details correct. The hardest part for me was finding out what version of MySQL my provider used, then copying and pasting all of the SQL hostname, port, and login details. Some other free forum softwares include: http://www.yabbforum.com/ and http://www.simplemachines.org/ |

Another one I found was PunBB (www.punbb.org). It's pretty nice.

Another question. When you get to college, what do I go into? Is it Computer Sciences or something else? Also, what do they teach you? If by the time I get there I know all there is to know about web design (why am I going to college?!) what can they teach me? Thanks!

theres an orginization out there called B.P.A - Business Professionals of America. Its for high school kids to compete and learn business practices. One of the events is Web Design. My school has a team, we compete indavidually against other schools, if you place at state you go to nationals. I think it a great way to learn web design, and to see what other peoples ideas and techniques are. As for what college could teach you. you could maybe take some marketing classes or something to learn how to get your business out there and make it big.

That sounds brilliant AMD freak... a good way to see what you're up against in the way of competition.
Catacon, you'd most likely go into a Computer Science degree, where they would broaden your horizons to learning problem solving using architectures and data structures, and most likely they will also teach you graphic design if you wish. |

Thanks, that does make sense. AMD_Freak, do you have a website? I think I have heard of the NLC, I think I was invited too. It does seem like a good place to start. What do you do in it?

Depends on what part of the country your looking at. Are you looking at only your home state, neighboring states, or all the states?

Would you be interested in studying in canada? I am looking into Ottawa university, I hear their computer engineering program and their computer science/business management is great. A lot more inexpensive than US schools.

Depends. That's pretty far away from home (even more so for you). If the school was good enough and the atmosphere was nice, I would consider it, but as I said, I'm a ways off from looking at colleges.

You might talk to your school conselours, they should be able to guide you in the right direction, or give you some information pamphlets or whatever.
