Several Questions about phpBB

1 I now have some admin mod members and would like to know about forum rules?

Can any one give me advice on how to formulate some rules without beeing to spartan, or too much of a dictatorship as they say?

2 How can I make a avatar gallery for peole to choose from?

Where do you think i can find good graphics, and nothing too offensive.

3 Do you think my policy of the admin only member activation is good for security?

have you any security tips and advice for me?

That is all the questions I have at this time some more will come as soon as i have them?

thank you all

You may want to try searching the phpBB community forums for some of those questions. I'm sure they have been asked in there before.

If not, you could also try posting your questions there.

I would just look at forum rules on other sites and come up with some of your own. Avoid flamefests, spam, porn and you should be okay.

Has nothing to do with security. I would advise against using the mod queue just because people may come and want to post and may not wait around to be activated. I would only turn on that feature if you were having problems with spammers.

The main tip is to keep your forum updated with any patches that came out. PHPBB had a pretty severe exploit a little while ago. On the bottom of every page there is the PHPBB version. People would google for sites running specific versions to use the exploit. It was easily patched though.

You got it!

Like most things on phpBB (avatars, rank images, new themes) they generally just get uploaded to a folder and installed through the admin panel.

You want to go into the admin panel, under the "General Admin" section (on the left) you will have a "Configuration" link. Go to that and about halfway down there is a private messaging section. Set the first thing to enabled, and then set the max posts in the inbox, sentbox, and savebox.

I think you need to specify an actual smtp server to handle the PM's. I tried using my rogers account smtp server, and it worked like a charm. I believe that setting is at the very bottom on the general config page. you'll need to type out an smtp server, and its password.
