Scripting Computer checks
I work with a rather large organization and we need to find a good way to check our computer sytems on a regular basis. We have decided that we want to have an autorun cd which will automatically run and copy some files over for testing. However, we would like to make the results of the tests to be inputed into a datbase somehow and store this information under each computer system. Does anybody have any scripting recomendations that would work easily and great for inputing some information into a database? I have looked into python and kixtart so far but wanted to hear some other opinions on this or see if anyone else has found a similar solution.
Thanks |

You are kidding about the autorun CD. If that is the case and you have a large organization, then you will have to make a lot of CD's and visit a lot of computers and hope that people don't take the CD out. Not a good solution.
I guess that it does depend as FF as to what you are checking. It would also be helpful to know your network setup. If it is AD, then you can set logon, logoff, computer start and stop scripts. Do you want this to run at a certain time? More info needed.

Not kidding about the autorun cd all you have to do is have an autorun statement call a batch file or whatever. and yes, it is a lot of work to keep this many machines up and running 24/7. Currently I have an autorun cd call a batch file and a kixtart script, and copies a file from the a to the desktop and then deletes it. At the end its puts up a box to put a statekment in. Just the fact of having someone physically in front of the computer and logged in catchs a huge amount of problems before they become emergencies.
However, the simpleness of this makes the information hard to manage etc, etc. Im hoping somone would know more about outputing pretty simple info to a database (computer name, whose logged in, etc) so anybody know of a good scripting solution to this? Or prehaps i should just look furthur into kixtart |

You still didn't explain what you are trying to check for and what kind of network setup that you have AD, Peer, etc.
CD is still not a great idea. No doubt you can start a batch file from a CD but why would you want to. A login script would probably be best since you would only have to maintain one file and wouldn't have to visit each machine. would probably be best but that may depend on how your network is setup. |
