I AM FURIOUS! I've been thinking about starting a small home based business and having an online store. My wife and I have been brainstorming about the idea for the past month. We are both very excited. We had about four or five domain name ideas that would be perfect for our site. I went to domain register sites like GoDaddy and Yahoo Web Hosting numerous times over the course of the month and checked to make sure they were available and most of them were. Well earlier tonight, I checked some of our domain name ideas for availability and they were still open. Then while surfing the web, reading about e-commerce and such, I ended up at a site called Verio.com and searched my domain names again to check prices and again they were all available. So I finally decided to bite the bullet, whip out my credit card and go to Yahoo Web Hosting to finally register the domain that I wanted. So I go to Yahoo, and suddenly all of my domain names that I wanted are taken! I just stared at the screen dumbfounded. My heart sank. They were just available five minutes prior! I swear that the Verio site was rigged to automatically register domain names that people search for! I am devastated. Now they own all of my domains that I was interested in and I'll have to try and buy them at a premium. That ought to be illegal. I am sooo upset about this. They are scumbags. There ought to be a "use it or lose it" law so that people can't hoard domain names so they can resell them at a profit and rip people off.

I guess the moral of the story is be ready to buy one as soon as you search and find one available that you like..

This is actually where I was... http://www.addictwear.com From this site, click to search the whois.net and you will notice that the "addictwear" URL remains in your address bar even though you are supposedly taken to the whois site. It's WIERD...

Actually that has more to do with the improper use of frames than anything devious. So was activewear.com one of the domains in question? If so it was registered in 2000 but expires in 2005.

Did a Whois look up on that site and it's registered to Al-Ma Apparel Group in Columbus, Ohio in 2000, but will expire on the 19th (13 days). Some domiain registrars will allow you to auto-buy as soon as it expires (if the previous owner does not renew before then).

Sorry for the late replies. I've actually got two different ideas and I'm going to act on both of them. I started working on the smaller, wimpier one first but the store isn't open for sales yet. I've still got a lot of work to do and most importantly a lot of legal stuff to do like copyrighting and trademarking. But,... I've started http://www.sushi-stuff.com You see, I don't know if any of you are into sushi but I'm addicted to it like crack. People really are passionate about thier sushi. And you've probably seen that it's getting more and more popular and is considered hip and trendy. It's going to be a site for sushi enthusiasts. I'm going to have some cool shirts printed up with my sushi prints and phrases that I've designed with Corel Draw12. I'm going to sell the Japanese beer/sushi posters that you see in japanese restaurants, I'm going to make bumperstickers and I might make hats. There are also some cool sushi items that are already manufactured that I'll be buying (hopefully at low bulk prices) and reselling. I'll also sell this stuff on Ebay. A couple of years ago I wanted to buy some cool japanese beer/sushi posters to hang in my home theater room and had a heck of a time finding them online. You see, I wanted to start a CafePress site or a PrintMojo site selling my sushi related shirts, bumperstickers and hats but I didn't like having them as the middleman and taking a percentage of every sale, so I decided to do it all myself.
The other e-store is still top secret and I believe can really be successful and could have the potential to make some real money. I'll be selling a product that nearly everyone will think is cool and might want. I still however have to make sure that it hasn't been done before and that I'm not stealing someone else's idea. |
