Feedback on a CMS application required please

Hi,

our site designer has recommended this CMS application for our site: http://www.sitecore.net/ Does anyone have any experience of this app or any advice as to how we can assess it and its use to us? Does anyone know of any other CMS app which might do the job just as well or better?

Any thoughts, suggestions, etc gladly received.
Thanks for reading.

It really depends. The sitecore one is .NET app which limits using it on Windows servers. Windows hosts are generally more expensive and not as plentiful as the 'nix ones. Not familar with any .NET CMS either.

I recommend either Joomla or Drupal, which run on 'nix servers, but that depends on your needs. What is the site going to be used for?

Well, we're a mac based company and will be updating and editing, etc, from our macs via our mac server. The site essentially has a large file database whereby our clients will be able to access private areas by password to search and download pdf files via ftp. We are reliant on the expertise of our builders but feel a bit vulnerable in the face of such an expensive transaction and I was just 'fishing' for responses here, really, since this is where the expertise tends to be.

Are you going to host the files on the Mac server or on a host somewhere?

that is currently undecided but we are most likely going to have them hosted.

You could try Joomla as your CMS. Joomla has components that are developed separately for it. There is one called DocMan that is for document management. Should work okay on the Mac server.
