Tracking page views

Many years back, I had a hit counter on my personal website. It sent a cookie to users that let me track what site they came from, how long they viewed my page, what links they clicked, and where they went after my page.

I wanted to add something like this to my tech company's website, so I can see which areas of marketing are working the best. Does anyone know where I can get the code to add one?

Thanks.

Wow! That really does do just about everything!

I feel dumb asking, but the website is a bit conflicting; How do I add that to our website? It doesn't seem as simple as pasting some code into the index page.

Awstats examines your logfiles. It isn't a click tracker but it does give you quite a bit of information.

Ok just to clear something up .. awstats is not you just code up in a webpage - those methods will be largely ineffective. A stats program is something that usually comes on most good webhosts. If you are with a hosting company, check out their control panel, they are going to have something that allows you extensive logging of your page hits.

Okay, now I follow. Sorry, I can be slow on the intake some mornings.

My old tracker I referred to earlier was all HTML based and worked off cookies. I assumed you were linking me to the same thing.

I just checked our server and it does, indeed, have what this program needs to run. Now, I just need to figure out how to set this up

Ha! I caught the text as I was clicking to download. It won't run on WinXP. Where's my Mac when I need it?

Is there any way to get it to run on this OS (other than changing the compatibility option, which didn't work)? If not, I need to find another one, unfortunately.

Does your server run on XP? It doesn't run on your computer but your server.

Yeah, it does. Though I'm regretting that more and more.

Is there anything that would be HTML or JAVA based that could just tell me the website that people click in from? That's the only data I'm really looking for.

Where people come from is very easy to get and log for example: http://www.phpfreaks.com/tutorials/22/0.php is a very easy bit of php code you can add to track where people come from and log it to a file on your server.
