how do i create that little icon that appears before the page address?
the one that appears just before the "http..." and also appears when a page is bookmarked?

What you're refering to is called a 'Favicon.'

Here's a good tutorial on the subject that I have used in the past when first making them.

http://buildtutorials.com/?m=show&id=63

In your first few attempts it can be pretty tricky to make them actually look good, and not pixelated.

Actually its fairly simple. When you have the image you want to use go here http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon/ Make sure the image is fairly simple and around 20x20 that you upload. this will make sure the image quality and meaning are clear to who ever sees it.

Sometimes IE is picky and requires the "favicon.ico" file to be in the top directory of your site where the html files are stored, IIRC there isnt alot of notice taken about the tag regarding shortcut icons.

Does the site have to be on a server for that favicon to work? My site is currently not on the web, and I tested the home page for my site in the browser, but no favicon?

I used the tag information below and it it place in between the header tags, and it is below a css tag. Is this correct?

link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico"

thanks

Klutz

you didn't actually insert "favicon.ico" right?
you're supposed to direct to the actual file (wherever it is on the root site).

So it should be showing up even though it's not hosted on the web? Ok, so I need to direct the [href] to C:\Documents\yada\yada\yada? Also does each page need that tag?

thanks,

klutz
