VPS vs Reseller?
Hi.
Got a question here. I do see some company offering such services. What exactly is Virtual private hosting and something like Reseller?? And I saw something like Dedicated private hosting. What are they?

Reseller - setup as a hosting reseller so that you can resell hosting at discounted pricing. Most offer you your own DNS servers. This is a good way to start out if you just have a few accounts.
Virtual Private - in between dedicated and reseller. Here is a more detailed explanation. Dedicated - is when you have your own dedicated server. You have two flavors, managed and unmanaged. Managed is more expensive. You also can do colo, where you send in your own server to a host and they will hook it up to their pipes for you.

So virtual private means you shared the services with other people on the same server?
What about reseller? Im so confused. This means that you buy a plan from a provider and resell it to someone else? So in your statement, "you just have a few accounts", means the account bought from a provider? |

Reseller is a good way to get started if you want to start hosting accounts for people. Here is an example. Say you have 10 people that want hosting. You are charging them $6/month. As a reseller you are paying $3/month for each. 6x10=$60 3x10=$30 Your profit $30 Now say you have 50: 6x50=$300 3x50=$150 Your profit = $150 But if you had a dedicated server and are paying $100 month then it is like this: 6x10=$60 $100 You lose $40. 6x50=$300 $100 Your profit $200 So the more people that you host, the more sense that it makes to get dedicated hosting. Plus your plans are not tied into reselling whatever your host has. Last edited by mairving; 03-20-2006 at 08:27 AM. |
