Is it possible to host my own webpage?
Not sure if webpage is the correct term.
This may be a dumb question, but can it be done? Why do I need someone to host my webpage? If I purchase a domain name and code my page, what has to happen to bring my website online?

It can be done, BUT it would be expensive. You'll need your own hardware (Server) and other network equipment, plus some kind of broadband connection which would add the cost up. To me it's better to have someone else host your website for you - that's what I do.

The key would be having a static IP. If your ISP offers this, then yes you can. Just point your domain DNS to your static IP, install a webserver (IIS or Apache), open port 80 on your firewall and there you go. I do this on my home machine as a development environment and it works great.
The only catch would be your machine would need to be on all the time and if you get too much traffic, your ISP probably would not like it and may shut you down. |

It is possible to host your own site
I recently installed my own website. I have it on a WinXP machine. I use Earthlink as my IPS (they don't block port 80 which is used for HTTP requests). I installed Apache web server software, which is free. I have a broadband connection with a dynamic IP. I use DirectUpdate to take care of this. I registered my domain name with churchquest.com. I've been using them for some time as a web host, so I trust them. I have a broadband router which allows me to set what types of servers I wish to run and on which internal IP address this traffic should be allowed. You will have to do a lot of reading, but if you stick with it, you will succeed. My holdup for a long time was that I thought my provider blocked port 80. I knew there was a work-around for using port 8080, but I never researched it. Here is a website that helped me install and run my own web server software:
http://www.dslwebserver.com/ The site that is running on my home machine: http://www.praisejesusamen.com A site I have hosted at dot5hosting: http://www.altizer.org It was a gratifying accomplishment to set up my own web server. Next I'm going to configure Apache for running multiple domains from one dynamic IP address. I think I can do this within the httpd.conf file which is the file you will have to edit for Apache. Good Luck! |
