DreamHost

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone here has ever used DreamHost before, and what they thought of them?

My friend recently signed up using a promo code: 50BUCKHOSTING where its $50 for the entire year (where as its normally $120 or so), for this:

UNLIMITED domains hosted
UNLIMITED subdomains
20 GB Disk, 1 TB Transfer
3000 Mailboxes, 75 Shell/FTP Users

It seems like they may be giving so many discounts that it may go under soon. So far he says he hasnt had any problems, but hes only been using them for about a week.

Thanks

This is nothing to worry about and is quite typical. They give you an enormous amount of space/bandwidth knowing you will _never_ come close to using a fraction of it. If you looked, you would probably find 100 other hosts offering similar plans.

I suspect hosts do this so they look better when compared against other hosts.

If it sounds too good to be true...

From what I have heard about Dreamhost, they offer the impossible 1TB transfer and then charge you for hidden stuff. I believe that they have CPU limits which limit what you can do on the server. So you have 1TB transfer but because of the CPU limits, you only get a fraction of that. Oh, and they are likely to terminate your account for going over this mystery limit and you lose the prepaid money. The Better Business Burea gives them their worst F rating.

At 1 TB, you would have to be serving ~350k per second 24/7/30. Ebay and Amazon probably have that much traffic.

Good call on the CPU limitation, didn't think about that. They might limit RAM as well which would inhibit some scripts from running.

What would be most ironic is if dreamhost-sucks.com was hosted by Dreamhost.

Theres no way of telling what host this domains using as it hiding its contact details in WHOIS which also display what host the domains using. Although it would be ironic if Dreamhost was hosting that domain.

Dreamhost is BS in the hosting underground. 20GB space and 1TB of bandwidth...good luck ever getting near it before one of their TOS limitations gets ya. First of all to get 7.95 a month you have to enter a two year contract! One year contract for 9.95 a month (of course you have to pay that entire year up front first). You can lock it at 9.95 a month but that is a 50$ setup fee. Most are not aware of how little work it is to setup an account. I can setup a Cpanel account in 1.5 min. Think what I could get if I charge 50$ for that service lol.

That part is just scary. Who knows what the heck could show up on your bill every month.
