Hosting your computer
I got a webpage and some other thing i would like to host on my computer. Also would it be possible to host ventrilo or teamspeak on your personal computer. I know its not a good idea because lagg problems, but i would like to know how to make my computer a host like a server. The computer will not be in use anytime when hosting. I got my other computer in my room. This one will be just for hosting. Lagg will be at minimum. I only got two computer connected to the internet now. So, how can i make this possible?

Try googling dynamic DNS. This service will allow you to host a site on your existing connection.

But dont you pay for these things. Is there something you can use or do so that you dont pay at all?

Make sure your ISP is OK with this - especially if you'll be doing high-bandwidth applications.

Here are your choices:
a.) You can request a static address from your ISP and pay additional charges. b.) Get some cheap webspace and build a simple desktop application that will forward your current address to a database application on the server, and whenever someone visits your site, this app will redirect your visitors to your home computer. The problem you are facing is not having a static address. A static address is key to being found on the net. These addresses and services are not free (unfortunately). And, as blue60007 says, make sure your ISP is ok with it, or you face losing your service. |

Hosting ventrilo is easy, but you can only host an 8 man server on your home computer. Just head over to www.ventrilo.com/download.php and download the server file for windows. (I assume you are running windows)

Oh and blue mentioned to see with my isp before running high bandwich programs. Isn't running a program like vent the same as hosting a game server for like unreal tournament or call of duty 2? If is is i never had problem with my isp when hosting game servers.

I think vent would be using less bandwidth than a cod2 server. Not sure though on VoIP.
