java questions

working for a project for my compsci class, and the other kids in my group decided to make it uneccessarily difficult by adding user input. they dont really know what theyre doing, so they just take code off the web and try putting it in the program and its not really working.

the goal of the first portion of the project is to take input of 10 strings from the user then put them into an arraylist. the input is the hard part for me. first of all, i have no idea how to get this input to work, everything im trying is failing miserably, there are errors all over, etc. I hate using input because its never required for the course and i can never get it to work correctly, but anyway, i have anohter problem besides that. It seems like the bufferedReader thing in java is made to input strings, is there a way to cast these to ints? i need to be able to cast the strings to ints, my teacher said not to worry about the fact that the user might input characters instead...
