I bought a website and it's all in php - how do I activate it?

Hi,
I bought a website recently - actually, I bought an ebook from an internet marketer and he allowed me to choose a website from his catalogue. It's a nice looking site and I managed to get a good domain name for it which has just been dropped by someone and still has PR rating and links to it from other sites.

The website guy also gave me a pdf manual on the website, but as usual with these things it assumes so much knowledge that it's difficult to follow without knowing a bit. The guy has not replied to my emails - I guess he thinks he doesn't need to give support on a freebie! So I have a great site, but cannot get it running.

I uploaded it to my host - Hostgator.com - I have a 'baby gator' account there - I created a folder with the site name inside my 'public_html' folder and uploaded the site to that folder. In the instruction manual for the site it tells me to have the permissions changed - I contacted the Host admin and they have changed the permissions for me.

Now what? can anyone help me please?

Thanks for reading.

Could you provide a bit more information?

What error are you now getting?
What are you supposed to do according to the instructions?

Buying a website from an Internet Marketer who gave you a pdf manual...that already sounds like a nightmare.

Are you sure that the site is php? Generally you only have permission problems with perl/cgi. What is the url?

Hi,
thanks for reading and posting to this thread.

The relevent section in the pdf 'manual' says, as follows:

"The ...... Control Panel is a platform dependent Administrative System
for managing our ... Sites. It allows you to
completely administer your sites through a web browser, from anywhere in the
world you may happen to be.

The Control Panel is a work in progress and continues to evolve as the
marketing techniques and ideas we encounter change over time. Our goal is to
provide an intuitive, user friendly system that is productive to use for both
beginners and experts alike.

Unless you have some expertise with JavaScript and PHP, we recommend that
you do not attempt to edit your ... Sites in a typical HTML
Editor – these often corrupt scripting or add superfluous HTML that interferes
with the overall look, feel and operation of the sites.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

● PHP 4.3 or Higher
● Ability to set File and Folder Permissions

INSTALLATION STRATEGY

... Sites may be installed in the root of a domain, a
folder, sub-folder or on a sub-domain or a folder of a sub-domain. The
underlying scripting will automatically recognize and interact with the type of
installation you performed.

You may mix and match different types of installations on the domain – that is
entirely up to you and your own approach to Adsense. We'll discuss additional
strategies at the end of the User Guide to help you in planning future
installations.

INSTALLATION

After you've downloaded and unzipped your ... Site,
you will need to upload it using an FTP Client. You should upload it while
preserving the folder and file structure originally provided. Do not rename or
move any of the folders or files – doing so will cause unexpected problems with
the site's operation.

After uploading your site, you will also need to set a few File and Folder
permissions as indicated below:

● RssFeed.xml, Sitemap.xml, urllist.txt – set to 646
● Aticles and Content Folders – set to 747
● All Files in the Content and Includes Folders – set to 646

Note: If the Control Panel does not work properly after setting the permissions
above, try resetting all of the Folder and File permissions to 755 – some hosts
require this.

Note: do not change any of the other permissions set by default.

FIRST LOGIN

After completing the installation, you may then navigate to your site through a
web browser to the location you installed. As this was a new installation, you
will automatically be redirected to the Control Panel Login page. "

The folder which contains the site contains the following folders and files:

Admin (folder)
Articles (folder)
Content (folder)
Images (folder)
Includes (folder)
Legal (folder)
Links (folder)
Partners (folder)
Sitemaps (folder)
index (php file)
robots (text doc)
RssFeed (XML doc)
Sitemap (XML doc)
urlist (text doc)

You shouldn't have to create another folder inside the public_html folder, just plop the files inside the public_html folder...this is the root. ie, a file called index.htm in there could be accessed by www.mysite.com/index.htm I think the way you've got it set up is www.mysite.com/mysite/index.htm

Do you have your domain name set up so it takes you to your server? First things first...try getting a simple "test" page working first.

You bought an ebook and got a website from his catalog? It sounds like a "how to make lots of money at home" deals. You bought a "great site"?

Maybe contacting hostgator can help?

Also, are you able to view the website offline, with the files on your local computer?

It makes more sense now. You don't have to set permissions on your files. You have to set permissions on your folders. This allows you to upload files (pictures, videos, pdf's) to that folder through your web browser.

It doesn't say anything about installing a database. I would that you would need one. You would have to have that setup prior to doing the install.
