What is the purpose of the em and /em Html tags?
I checked it out and it is the exact same and the i and /i tags.

So why the redundant tags?

[em] = emphasis... better to use for SEO, the same reason [strong] is preferred over [b].
[b] and [i] are formatting elements, not content elements.
