Building a travel web site, need advice
Hi:
I am going to begin some extensive traveling in the next month, my first Round the World (RTW) and want to build a solid web site to last for years. I have reviewed some, but not all, of the hosting threads in this forum and it seems there is a huge amount of information here. However, some of it seems like it is old enough it may be worth checking. Just purchsaed my own domain because it matches my very distinctive travel ID, is short, and was available: until I bought it yesterday, a .org name. I will end up with photos, a blog, and email on the site. I am looking for suggestions, but mainly for advice on which tools to use to build the site before I leave. I will not want to be forced to take my laptop with me to these remote places, so storing the web files online is vital if it can be done. I have MS Office 2003 and a group of applications beyonf those, but is this still accurate and complete? I am NOT at all technical, although I have moments of brilliance. I have not programmed anything--ever, so I don't know any of the lingo. Mozilla Composer: A software that comes with Mozilla's Internet Browser package. Freeware. Though I personally never used it, it is said to be very versatile and efficient. Microsoft Office 2003 Frontpage: A MS product - still, pretty good for novices. I used the OfficeXP version and it was easy to learn from. Though its range on what you can do is limited, its very good for novices - seeing the source code while you do the "WYSIWYG" program, it aids in, if you desire so, the learning of coding a website. CoffeeCup: Seemingly a very easy to use HTML editor. I just fideled around with it before writing this sub-article, and I think that it is pretty good. It can do many things that MS Office and Mozilla Composer can't, and it's pretty easy to use. It takes some getting used to, though. |

I would say your best bet would be to use MS Frontpage since you already own it. it can be setup to automatically connect and upload the page your working on when you click save. I personally sat down and learned the actual HTML code first and use frontpage "backwards" on the rare times i use it. I type the code and use the preview tab to make sure it looks right rather than saving and viewing it in the browser.
If you dont plan on taking your laptop then how do you plan on updating the site? Or will you create it once the trip is finished?

So given that, if the site is built before I leave, those two types of new information can be uploaded without the laptop, correct? I plan to stop in internet cafes along the way to upload photos, use the SD card reader at the internet cafe, and have them burn two copies of photo CD's at each stop. I am assuming stardard Windows workstations along the way, each with USB port for SD card reader connection. |

why not just install a blogging software like wordpress on your site and then find a theme you like? then its just a matter of logging in at the cafes, typing what you want, adding some pics and hitting save. everything is done server side. its extremely easy to use
