Couple questions about starting a website? or maybe an FTP?

OK, im looking to make a website, mostly to allow downloads of programs i have made (java, ti-83, etc.) I am also considering just doing an FTP. is there a way i could get a website like this set up for free? or would the FTP be the better route? either way, i need some info about how to do this exactly. Im pretty internet-illiterate beyond normal browsing.

For FREE, my personal preference has been www.freewebs.com - it is pretty dynamic and you'll be able to get a site up and running in no time. Personally, if you want to share your programs with others, you'll need a website with some pages and images and what not. This will make people stay longer than 10 seconds and will boost credibility.

xp pro has ftp software built into it, you just need to install it and configure it on the pc and configure your router to forward tcp port 21 to that machine.

You will most definitely want to use web hosting for this. If you just want to host some small files, you can find a myriad of free services available.
