art website questions

Could any of you give me an overview of the services for creating websites? The page itself would be a simple showcase of artwork. Specifically I am confused about what I should do after registering a domain (most likely at godaddy.com). Would the godaddy service be adequate for a complete custom webpage?

Or would I be paying a yearly fee for the domain in addition to a hosting service? And in what way does the domain provider work with the host of the actual site? I am wondering about this because godaddy is shown to have some sort of hosting service provided with the purchase of the domain. What I am basically admitting to is complete ignorance of how to use these services together.

Also, I have heard of people that have lost a ton of money because of having too much traffic. Is this only a problem for those who host their own websites at home and run up electric bills? I am wondering if there is any risk involved in running this type of website, or websites in general.

Any help would be appreciated.

It isn't difficult. Just register the domain. GoDaddy is a good choice. They present you with several hundred options when you register. They only ones to really consider are alternate domain names, ie .net, .org in addition to the .com. Use this option if you want to keep someone else from poaching on your domain. The other option to consider is the private domains. This keeps the domain info about you private.

Don't use GoDaddy for hosting. There are much better choices. Look at the sticky thread in the top of this forum for more info. Once you have signed up with a host. Then you go back to GoDaddy and change the nameservers to the one that your host specifies.

Unless you are hosting audio or video you won't have a traffic (bandwidth) problem.

BYW, welcome to PCMech.
