You could make it an included file using php, perl, SSI or other. That is the way most are done nowadays.

i guess i could be more specific. is there any way to achieve this by using css properties because i only know xhtml and css. also i saw something about dhtml on the web friday and i thought it stud for dynamic html. so i thought mabye that might be my answer. do you have any information or handy guides about dhtml.
me and my friend were also talking to out schools tech person and he is using frames on our schools site and wants to get rid of them but get the same effect also.

next year i am going to study more web languages.

im hoping dhtml might be my answer if css cant do it.

thx for replying

EDIT: im still thinking about this what if i had absolute placed div's and then javascript calling the navigation bar from a separate location then it would appear on every page. srry if i mention stupid stuff like this mabye. i am VERY new to web development and know what frames are but never used them in a site so i lack some knowledge srry. im just trying to learn.

well i couldn't find out how to do it in css so im copying the code to 20 pages all linked to the same css and the navagation menu will be called from an external javascript file. so there is minimum work being done.

well thx for reading my thread even if you couldn't help me.

Not a lot of options. You can use frames or a scripting language. If you plan on doing websites in the future you need to learn one. PHP is not difficult to learn.

If you don't want to learn PHP, you can just use SSI includes, and that should address everything you need at this point.

Just wondering, but why can you not use frames? You can pretty much mask them up nowadays.

Can tables be used on all of the pages? That way, the column on the left changes depending on which page is loaded. Maybe this will yield a similar result to what you're looking for?
