Visual Basic Code
Hi.. I've decided to teach myself Visual Basic. An old Microsoft Press book that I have states "Combining the proven capabilities of the Basic language with visual design tools..." etc. Does this mean that I can use old Basic commands (for example CLS, and IF..THEN, etc...I've programmed in GWBasic and Quick Basic) in the code boxes of Visual Basic, or does Visual Basic have it's own library of coding commands? Some of the examples the book uses do not look familiar. Is there a good book that discusses just the commands for Visual Basic?
Appreciate any advice you have, Thank you cuzzzzz |

i'm pretty sure visual basic was built on the same coding structure as basic. i'm not sure about clearing the screen, but i know for a fact if then else and loops are all coded the exact same way.
it does have it's own codes, too. there's a visual basic for dummies that does a nice breakdown of the coding, but if you've done programming before, you could probably get a programmers reference book, like this. it doesn't look like that one covers any of the .net programming, though.

VB (non-.NET) is completely dead. The new VB.Net technology is now the standard.
If you want to play around with it, you can download VB.Net Express for free here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vb/ In the "Start Page" of VB Express, it has some nice links for beginners to follow. |

Thank you both.
Faulkner132.. you mention that VB is dead. Any programs I write in an old VB version will still work on my Win98SE computer.. that's all I really want. I've copied a few sample programs from my MS VB program's books. Thanks again. |

Hi.. I picked up the book that homer15 suggested (on ebay), and it's quite good.
New problem. When I tried to install my (legitimate) copy of VB3 from it's original floppy disks on a computer that it had been on before (PIII-400, Win98SE), got an error message "file vbsetup.exe not found" My disk does not have this file, only vbsetup.ex_ Someone said that the file is probably not unpacking from the .ex_ file. Anyone know where i might find another set of these disks, or just a copy of disk 1? Ebay has VB3 PRO up for auction, but I'd be very happy with this standard edition. Thanks for any ideas. cuzzzzz |
