HTML Editor Reviews

I'm searching for some updated (i.e. at least done in 2006) reviews of the following HTML editors:

Coffee Cup 2007
HotDog Pro 7
Homesite 5.5

Any links would be appreciated, or user experiences.

Can't help you there, but you want a good freebie?

Formerly the Mozilla suite, the Composer module is quite nice.

Thanks GLC, I will give Composer a shot (hadn't heard of this one before!).

HotDog Pro was my old favorite from college, and I was happy to see that it is still being actively developed. In the interim though, it seems like Coffee Cup and Homesite have become the premiere tools for HTML editing.

Most of the reviews I've seen however date from around 2000 to 2004 though, so maybe some of you internet sleuths can help turn up some more recent content. I'll probably just end up trying each one out myself, but it always helps to see if there are any major pros/cons in advance.

You might want to try googling it, too.

You are really talking about 2 different products. HotDog Pro and CoffeeCup are WYSIWYG HTML editors, no HTML experience needed. Homesite is for hand coders. You need to know how to manipulate and write HTML to use it.

Personal opinion is that CoffeeCup and HotDog Pro are okay for light duty small time pages, maybe a single site or two. Beyond that they aren't really very functional. The best by a wide margin in HTML WYSIWYG editors is Dreamweaver. It writes nice clean code and offers a lot more beyond HTML editing. The one that I use the most is Homesite. The second most that I use is vi, which is a 'nix text editor that you can use with syntax highlighting that does a pretty good job.

Even though this thread is about software, I am going to move it to the Web Dev forum to give it a little more exposure.

I'm glad to hear that Hotdog has gained WSYWIG functionality. Back when I used it, it was an ultra-smart text editor with the ability to preview your work in-program.

The thing I loved about it the most was the ability to color code specific html tags and autoformat all the intro stuff. It helped a whole lot when I was learning html.

Homesite however is looking better and better. BTW - are any of these cross platform? I'd hate to spend all this time learning the ins and outs of a specific program and not be able to use it on my Mac and Linux machines.
