Problem With Image Upload

first off, please know that this post isn't a back-handed attempt to promote my site. i'm simply at the "up to here" stage with my host's support and don't know where else to go ... so i naturally thought i would turn to where the REAL knowledge is!

i'm attempting to upload images to a SUBdirectory of mine, however, it's not working. i've used 3 FTP apps (SmartFTP, WS_FTP, FileZilla) and ensure that the transfer mode is good (binary or auto) and can't for the life of me figure this out ....

i've created 2 test pages to view the image properties:

www.completeonlinemarketer.com/test_upload.htm

www.usanyou.com/test_upload.htm

the problem can be seen when viewing the image properties of www.usanyou.com/test_upload.htm" and seeing that it is creating an arbitrary SUB-directory called, "Complete_Online_Marketer."

"www.completeonlinemarketer.com" = my primary directory

"www.usanyou.com" = SUB-directory of completeonlinemarketer

for the life of me, i can't figure out WHY this erroneous subdirectory is being created. i have been painstakingly uploading the proper images from the proper directory under completeonlinemarketer/public_html/usanyou/Images and the properties from my web editor indicate that this is the uploaded URL.

however, IE shows this erroneous path and i can't even find the subdirectory Complete_Online_Marketer --- it certainly isn't anywhere in my subdirectory, usanyou.com!

i can't find "Complete_Online_Marketer" anywhere !!

all 3 ftp programs show a successful transfer. in fact, i used 3 different ftp programs in case i mistakenly set some property and named this "Complete_Online_Marketer" directory somewhere in my default ftp program ... but i definitely didn't use this name in any part of the other 2 (and really can't find this name anywhere in the 3rd anyway).

BTW, i am able to upload any other page from usanyou.com .... except for ANY images.

PLEASE Someone ... Anyone --- what gives?

Thx in advance for your troublshooting help !! ...

How are you generating your HTML? That appears to be the problem.

i'm using FrontPage. why do you think it's an editing problem? i've looked at that umpteen times (not that i know everything) and again, have been very careful in making sure that i go to the right directory. in fact, i don't do anything different than when i insert images for my primary directory.

also, where is this Complete_Online_Marketer coming from?

thx for your replly --

I would suspect that it is being loaded into the wrong folder or the folder that you are putting it in is a symlink (a sort of invisible shortcut), so that when you load it into the images folder you are loading it into the main image folder for completeonlinemarketer. To test this upload a new image into the folder and see if it shows up either site. You can test it by manually typing in the link to the image http://completeonlinemarketer.com/images/newimage.jpg , then test it for the other site:
http://usayou.com/images/newimage.jpg to see if it is there. If it is in the first site and not the second then it is either being put in the wrong directory or it is symlinked.

There should be an image directory inside of your usanyou.com directory. If there isn't create one and drop your files there and see if that fixes it.

No idea why FP is adding the extra link unless it can't find the file.

ok ... thx for this.

footnote - i have tried to move the images from primary image folder to subdomain image folder and no difference. but i confess i haven't tried re-created everything from scratch (ie. new image folder(s).)

usanyou.com has an image folder already and i had the same results in uploading. but my test files are using the same image from my primary folder.

i keep getting interrupted every time i go to have another look at things so will have to wait a couple of hours to re-think things. will post progress then.

have also noticed that somehow, my html for usanyou.com test page has added the erroneous subfolder to the image url. (looked everywhere else for folders vs html). i know i'm getting old, but i can't imagine HOW i could've typed that! ... or can FrontPage actually come up with this stuff on its own? (just grasping at straws there)

haven't heard of a "symlink" before. will also look that up an see what else i am doing wrong.

thx VERY MUCH for your reply -- i appreciate the input!! (and patience and non-lectures)

new day -- new epiphany!

OBVIOUSLY ... i can't hide the fact that i don't (didn't) have a clue what i was doing.

i've gone back with my tail between my legs to find that the code IS the problem (guess that makes ME the problem as well).

i see now that SUBdirectories don't behave as i expected them to and no matter how i insert my graphics, there is some "erroneous code" (i've since learned about "local relative paths") that gets created because I've been too oblivious to force the urls by coding them myself.

who knew ..?

that said, i'm still unable to upload from an "images" folder in my SUBdirectory and have to use the "images" folder from my primary directory. i'm still a little grey on that but as in the code problem, i'm sure it's obvious ... i just need to think about it some more.

i've experimented with image folders in both directories but the only consistent result i get is to use my primary directory's "image" folder.

update:
after manually coding the url paths in FrontPage, ALL my images are uploading as expected. however, as mentioned, i guess i'm not clear on why the "image" folders can't work in their own directories so i'm simply using one large image directory from my primary (root?) directory.

... so much to learn!!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for taking the time to force me to give my head a shake. i appreciate your time!
