Question Domain Name Registration?

I am about to start a small business and I want to have a website associated with the biz. I just read the two sticky's at the top of this forum and learned a lot of information. My question is about the domain name registration. One of the sticky's mentioned not to register the domain name with the web host. Is there a consensus regarding registering with a particular registrar or will anybody do?

After you register the name, what then? I assume you then pick a web host? Are the next steps automatically set in order for you like a check off list?

I never thought I would want my own website. And, I definately (for now) don't want to learn the HTML programming. But, then, until I found PCM, I never thought I would build my own computer either.

Thanks for your help and please, talk to me like you're talking to someone who is totally clueless.

The important thing is not to let your host register the domain for you. If they do some will actually own the domain and charge you a good chunk if you want to move hosts. I also don't like having the registar do the hosting.

I personally use GoDaddy for registrations even though their commercials annoy me.

The process is that you register the domain name. If you use GoDaddy just skip all of the junk that they try to up sell you on. The only one that is worthwhile is the private domain registrations so your whois info isn't available. Once you have the domain it can sit at the registar unused for as long as you want. After that sign up with a host. Once the site is ready then log back into your registar and give the site the new nameservers, your host will provide you with these, wait 24-48 hours and you have a website.
