Creating Username & Password system

Hi Folks

I'm interested in creating a 'restricted' area within my website, and would like to set up a system whereby this is accessed on a username and password basis.

As a novice,I expect that this is heading into uncharted waters for me, but any help, advice or assistance I can get would be most appreciated.

I expect a steep learning curve!

You can setup a password protect a directory using .htaccess.

If you want to do this and integrate it into your site then I would advise against writing your own. There are plenty of good CMS (Content Management Systems) out there that will give you a password protected admin area. Writing your own is both a waste of time and a security risk.

I believe some hosting providers have the "password protected directories" feature available, you may want to check if yours does.

That uses .htaccess to control the directory access. Cpanel and other backend admin pieces offer this functionality. There are some problems with it. The main problem is that oftentimes you are limited to a single user and password for the directory or page.

Yeah I guess that would be a problem, I haven't really tried multiple users with my host...but not I am curious!

Thanks.
