Question Wordpress Help

Hi everyone,

I am looking to start my own wordpress template. I know that I need a hosting company, along with the wordpress download. The problem is that I don't know anything about mysql whatsoever.

I downloaded the software, changed the file name, and still need to find a host, and find an FTP upload software.

Can someone help me out with the mysql when a beginner wants to incorporate WP?

Thanks so much!

Most hosts nowadays make it a bit simpler. You can install WP using Fantasitco in CPanel. This is pretty easy and makes it easy to upgrade as well. In all of this you will still need to get a host first, see the sticky thread at the top for ideas or look at Wordpress's suggestions. You don't have as many options but you can also setup a free one at Wordpress.com.

smokin Wordpress for beginners

Hi sm100378,

If you want to create your own wordpress template they is a way of doing it without all of the hosting and mysql database, you only need that after your template has been created.

There is a program i use called Artisteer - http://www.artisteer.com/

To run your wordpress installation on your server you will need to download wordpress - http://wordpress.org/

When you have done that you need to unzip the instalation and upload all the files to your online directory using an FTP a free FTP i use is - http://filezilla-project.org/ You will need to download the client version.

Once it is updated you need to set - up a mysql database which will be in your hosting control panel.

Then you will need to go online to the place you uploaded Wordpress ( the online folder ) www.-your-name.com follow the instructions and when it asks you to fill in the database user name and password you go back to where you set up the mysql and copy and paste the details from that. Then fill in the rest of the fields and you good to go.

We also do one click installation for WP but if you have chosen a host that does not offer one click install then use the method above, any problems you can email me at richard@getoninter.net

Regards,
Richard

Wordpress install guide: http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress

If you're a beginner, I wouldn't suggest creating your own template from scratch yet. Look around on some of the free sites for a template you like first and use one of those.

Here's some free ones:

Here's some comments on some useful wordpress plugins that you may want to look at:

If you're looking for a web host, I'd suggest surpasshosting. They're inexpensive and their support and uptime is pretty good.
