Web Hosting

I looked through the sticky and only saw dreamhost recommended once. We use dreamhost at the radio station I work at, and they have been pretty solid with fairly helpful customer service. My friend (who maintains the radio station's website) personally uses godaddy for his own site. He said they tried to sell him a bunch of extra options while signing up, but have been fairly decent for him. He has never had to use much of the customer support, so he doesn't know how they are. Most things I've read online about godaddy have been negative.

What would you guys suggest? I'm looking to host a personal website with a blog and professional writing samples.

Thanks!

godaddy for the domain ONLY. They're not a hosting company, and there are plenty of horror stories about godaddy hosting. There's lots of horror storries about dreamhost too. Dreamhost tends to have a lot more downtime than most places too. There's very few complaints about domain management from godaddy, though (aside from trying to sell you additional things during the sign-up process)

surpasshosting.com for hosting. $6 a month for a low traffic site. I use it for my sites and suggest it to others. Good support, easy to use. Last I checked, though, they were still running on apache 1.x

Hey Force, thanks for the response. I checked out their website, and they look pretty good to me. If i were to host my own semi-professional website along with a professional website for my father, would this be the best choice? It would only be $6, correct?

Sure...I've actually got two low-traffic domains hosted under a $6 account now. It shouldn't be too difficult to upgrade later if you should choose to do so.

Why don't you get your own bloody hardware and build your own bloody server. It's a lot of work and money but it's better than depending on an external web host engine.

Actually, that's what I wanted to do initially, but it's restricted in Charter's fine print. I'm running a simple file server from my house right now, but I have yet to use it as a web server. I'm currently getting server space through a friend of a friend in Canada.

What do you mean by "Charter's fine print"?

I think he's referring to his ISP. Residiential service usually prohibits users from hosting web/FTP servers.

Godaddy has been a great host for me. I have about 20 sites hosted with them and have installed Joomla, Oscommerce, Mambo and a few other php/mysql database jobbies (photo databases like Coppermine and Zenphoto) - all cool. I have rung support about 50 times in about 2 and a half years and have had extremely polite people help me everytime (except one edited by admin) with a maximum wait of 10 minutes, average about 1 minute (the time difference in Australia helps there though). The hosting prices are really cheap as are domain names, I have read on other forums (and now this one) about godaddy support problems and godaddy hosting problems bla bla but it aint happened to me yet so there you go. This is the first time I have praised them in public though so I hope my recommendation doesn't come back to haunt me. I am looking at livecart.com for a shopping cart and I might use bluehost for that because the bloke who runs livecart recommends them.

I very strongly recommend not to use godaddy for hosting. They're great for registering domains, but hosting is not a good idea.
