Website critique/troubleshooting
I am working on a band website for my father. I have little to no experience in this area. I created the original website several years ago with FrontPage and it was in need of a complete overhaul. I am working with Dreamweaver CS4 now and it is immensely more powerful and also more complex.
I have a basic design. Nothing fancy. I have most of the content up on the site. www.runawaytrainbluegrass.com There are some issues, as you will probably see if you follow that link. The site behaves completely differently in all three browsers I have tried. Here are screen shots of the home page from the three browsers I have on my PC. Maxthon 2.1.5 - Formatting is fine but the top banner is a blank box. ![]() IE8 w/compatibiliy mode - Everything works except for sound clips (see below). If I turn off compatibility mode the formatting looks similar to Firefox and the page is not centered. Firefox 3 - Formatting is off. Pages are not centered. Sound clips do not work. Calendar Page does not look right. I have embedded a flash player into the sound clips page to play the clips from their CD. It works fine in Maxthon but that is the only browser that the clips show up in. I followed THIS tutorial to add that player to the page. I cannot figure out why it only works in one browser. In IE8 and Firefox3 the spots where the players should be are simply blank. THIS is what the sound clips page is supposed to look like (except for the missing banner). I am running Windows 7 so maybe something is different on my end so feedback from users on different platforms may help. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, any suggestions on how to improve the site are welcome.

I see the thread got moved. I had put it in General Discussion becuase there seems to be far more traffic there. Now I have two similar threads and I don't need the other one about embedding MP3 players.
Following ForceFlows advice, I changed the filepaths to relative paths. That fixed the player issues in all of the browsers except Firefox. I cannot figure out why Firefox insists on screwing up everything on the site. The site is still not centered in Firefox and the sound clips do not play (Error playing file). If anyone has any advice on that it would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps more baffling is the blank banner on Maxthon. I cannot figure that one out at all. Maxthon uses IE as the rendering engine and it works fine in IE so why not in Maxthon? Here is a comparison of the properties for the banner in IE and Maxthon: http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...Comparison.jpg Last edited by Hi Ho; 01-26-2009 at 11:46 PM. |

For centering, try this: http://www.simplebits.com/notebook/2...centering.html
[edit]: The blank spots might be because flash isn't installed for the specific browser

The banner is a simple JPEG so it's not a Flash problem. Flash is installed. Thank you for the link. I'll try that when I get home.

looks great. The sound clips not working may be because of "wrong path" it should be
HTML Code:
playerID=6&soundFile=sounds/cold_sheets.mp3 |

It's not a linux vs windows thing. All URLs use only the forward slash: /
