SharePoint 2007 Help

My company has set up a SharePoint 2007 server. They have made me the site administrator and I would like to get into more back end stuff to make the site run smoother long term. The application manager is learning WOSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 on the fly so it is a bit convoluted at the moment.

Are there any SP experts here at PCmech are at least someone that could give me a list of good books to read. I could probably search amazon all day and not know exactly what to look for.

I wish I could be more specific, but I am really only familiar with SP on a site configuration level.

I'm actually *attempting* to install sharepoint 2007 right now on a win 2003 server.

My suggestion would be to set up a dedicated server for this. I've already hosed one test build getting the procedure down so far:

1) install all service packs and updates (do not install optional updates, such as .NET 3.0)
2) Join the server to an existing domain, or create a new domain. Do not leave as stand-alone workstation
3) install IIS
4) install .net 3.x (either from windows update or the distributable. Run windows update again to make sure the service pack for .NET was installed
5) set up user account permissions stuff
5a) set up two users in active directoy. moss_service and moss_admin. Add moss_admin to the administrators group.
6) Install MSSQL 2005 express and the server management studio express. click the "download" link to bypass the registration: http://www.microsoft.com/express/200...d/default.aspx
6a) use the moss_admin as the database administrator
7) run the SQL server management studio and login as moss_admin. On the left pane, expand "security" and click "logins". Double click on the moss_admin user. Click "server roles". check dbcreator and securityadmin
8) Install sharepoint 2007 SP1. When asked, select the advaned install, and select the complete install.
9) After the install completes, run through the config. If asked, you want a new server farm. Enter the database info. for server, just copy the path that shows in the login for the SQL server management studio tool. Enter moss_admin as the user. Leave the authentiaction method as-is. Let it install.
9) After the install, your prowser will pop up. Login with moss_admin. You'll have access to the config page.

ok, updated the procedure for a install that worked. Whether it's entirely secure or not, I'm not exactly sure.

have you had any experience working with a lightweight active directory? we are working with strictly AD right now and it seems to be very limiting.

Active directory was active directory, as far as I knew. It can be as simple or complex as you make it.
