Game Server Hosting

Hey I just had a question about hosting a server for the games that I play online.

If I signed up for a free web host, would I be able to use that host as a dedicated server?

I really don't understand game servers and what not so sorry if this is a really stupid question.

Basically is the only way to host a match online by renting a server?

You could run a server at your house if you have the right setup. The easiest thing is to buy a server. I highly doubt you will do much of anything with a free host.

I have another computer at my house. How could I use that as a dedicated server? Is there a website that offers the software?

A web server is different from a game server. If you go to a website host, they probably won't be able to accomidate it. You'll probably have to go to an actual game server hosting company. That'll probably run you about $100/mo.

You don't need any software. You just need to figure out how to set up the server to allow users to connect to it by opening the specific port. It is pretty simple. Install the game or the server client and then set up your config files for the game. Open up the port and viola, people should be able to connect via the IP address and port number.

Depending on the game and the amount of traffic you want to play I would be weary of using an in-home setup. Years ago we tried that and fried the server within a few weeks time, but the game we were hosting held traffic almost 24/7 and about at max capacity.

It would also be wise to have a dynamic IP.

You just turn the pc off when you don't want to host anymore.

Also keep in mind your ISP might scream at you if they see your bandwidth usage jump...They may want you to get a commercial account upgrade.

So it's definitely possible to do this as long as I moderate the usage? Also, I know nothing about setting up a server, where do I start?

What's the specs on the system you want the server to run on? What game(s) you want to run and for how long? I see you live in Boston, is this going to be a a private server for local friends, etc or do you want people from around the US or the world to connect to the server?

Notes:
  • Yes, it is possible to run your own server.
  • There will be a lot of factores to keep in mind. You internet speed, user base, system specs, etc.
  • There is a good chance users on the West coast will lag quite a bit depending on your internet speed.
  • Running your own server using the residental package from your ISP might be best for a more centralized userbase (East coast, locals near or around Boston).

As the admin, I have the ability to see what ISP you are using. Read this document and pay particular attention to item 8.5:

http://www.shrewsbury-ma.gov/egov/do...165_543487.pdf

A game server is "network services". If you upgrade to business service, you may run a game server. Business packages start at $100/mo.

Exactly, unless your current package is business service.

re: hosting

Shared Hosting & Reseller Hosting

personally, i use www.host100gb.com and www.1and1.com

they are fast and a good deal.

it include a domain name, 100Gb of web space, 20 email addresses, 2GB of mailbox space per account, 100 MySQL databases, 100 email aliases, photo galleries builder, web builder, blog and rss capabilities, firewall protextion, etc....

and that is only the beginner package at $4 a month. Go up to $5 a month, and get 100Gb of space, 1200 email accounts, 2 domain names, host many other websites there as well, 25 MySQL databases, etc. etc. etc....

they are the best deal i think. I've used them to host over 65-70 web sites.

Running a GSP consists of a lot of work, if something goes wrong you have to make sure you can fix it quickly and properly. Excuse the language, but half asses jobs don't cut it in this field.
