On sites like Mwave, NewEgg, and others you can click on pictures of their merchandise. It appears to be a digital photo but it is a solid white background and there are no rough edges around the image (box, modem, ect.) Anyone know what program that they use to cut the image out of a busy background?

I believe you are talking about the GIF's not JPG's. You can have a transparent background on GIF's. This allows you to see what is behind it, like background color, text, etc. My guess is they rip the pictures off the manufacturers site. That would mean they are professionally done. Otherwise, it is not all that difficult to touch up photos and remove backgrounds. Any simple graphical editor and some patience can produce some excellent photomanipulated images.

Hi ut1205
Photoshop or similar will do the job. In PS, ctrl A, ctrl X, ctrl V. This selects the image and pastes it into a 2nd layer. Select the marquee cutter with feathering set to 1 pixel. Zoom in & mark around object going about .5 pixel into edges. Press 'Shift Ctrl & I' this will invert your selection, Ctrl X will remove all outside of it. Double click the layer in layer properties (brings up layer effects). Select stroke, select 1 pixel and colour of intended background. Turn off background layer & convert mode to Indexed mode (Image, Mode, Indexed Colour). Save as filename.gif You could also try pasting layer (without strok effect) onto your background image. Have fun

Most of the time these are stock images that come from the manufacturer. You really don't want to spend a lot of time cleaning up images if you don't have to. Now if you want to get a program with images like this, check out Hemera PhotoObjects. I have a set that comes on about 8 CD's. All the images are saved on a transparent background. You can import them into Photoshop and drop these into your web pages.
Here is an example: Now if the picture already has a background around it, I usually use the magnetic lasso and magic wand in Photoshop to remove the background but this can take some time depending on the image. It really just depends upon the contrast of the images and how squared they are.

I'd doing an HTML maintenance site for my employer. I'll be taking vidio pictures of motors, pumps, ect. and how to repair or rebuild them. I thought it would look better if I could easily remove the clutter around them. I took a picture and used MS Image Composer to cut it out but results were less than desirable. Thanks again.
