What kind of website to make while trying to learn web development?

I'm trying to teach myself various things related to web development. Starting with (X)HTML, PHP, web servers etc. What are some ideas I can use to put these things in practice? What do most people do with this as they begin to learn it?

HI!!
I am don't have much experience about web development. I am also in learning stage like you.
I start with HTML and CSS. Very fist and basic step to start any web development with. First your mind should clear both the concept and any web development starts from here.

I would start by creating web pages for a fictional company, make up all of the copy, and use any images that you want after all it is not a live site. You can view them on your own system and you get the idea of how things work and don't work. Start with single pages and then start having linked pages. I would also start with embedded CSS and then move to linked CSS, this makes it a little bit faster for your testing. Also get used to testing your pages in all of the common browsers (IE, FF, Opera, Safari, Chrome).

Look at other sites you like and try to create them without looking at their code.

Build as many as you can to get the experience.

Hope this helps.

Each programming language is just like a foreign language to us for a web developer. You should start by learning (X)HTML and CSS first to get the understanding of how sites are coded. You also learn the coding standards set by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium). Very simple to do a quick Google of tutorials for beginner web design or development. There is a plethora of information online that you can learn from.

Once you have gotten a solid hold then move on and do the same thing with other programming languages as you see fit. Javascript is always good and so is PHP. It will take time. Most developers pick up one language that they use firmly and then learn bits and pieces of others to broaden their skills. There are very few out there that are 100% fluent in multiple language.
