Softaculous/Fantastico
I just discovered this server software. My host includes it with the plan I use. For those who haven't heard of Softaculous or Fantastico, they are an auto installer of 100's of scripts. It's a gold mine if your just starting a web site and don't really know what your doing. I just finished installing a Youtube clone video site. Took all of 20 seconds, done! It made a sub-directory, data base, passwords, everything. I'll I had to do was click install, review the configuration and provide my email address to receive details of the install. NICE.
Anyway, I was wondering if I install a bunch of these scripts, to play with them and keep the ones I like, is there anything to be concerned about? Is there such a thing as running to many scripts if I have the disc space? I'm on a shared server. Thanks! |

Usually, hosts don't keep them up to date. Meaning, they are likely to be vulnerable to security flaws. Check the developer websites of the scripts/apps to see if you have the latest versions.
The other thing to be concerned about is hitting your host limits (bandwidth, storage, CPU utilization, etc). Some hosts are very stringent about that, and some aren't. If I recall, you were using surpasshosting, and it's likely you won't hit those limitations. On the left hand side of your cPanel, it lists all these statistics.
