Newbie Java Question

I'm getting started learning some Java, I downloaded the Sun JDK, and I'm using This site as a starter guide. Question is, I'm trying to set the environment variables, but I'm on windows 2000 and cannot find the autoexec.bat file they are referring to in that tutorial. If i just skip that, the "javac" compile commands do not work. What file do I need to modify? Thanks.
