Smile Programming Newbie

ok, I want to start on something new. I want to learn how to program. So where do I start? Does anyone know of some good books to learn off of? Also what kind of programs will I need? What os should I use to put all this stuff on?? I have a windows 98 se, and a Linux one coming up soon(unless linux is too complicated for me) I heard that visual basic teaches bad habits?? Which language should I start on first?

Damn, I just wrote a reply and closed the window accidently
Oh well..

I would reccommend learning C++. I found visual c++ 4 with a very big book on it at some junk store for 5 bucks. The latest version at the time was 6, but it's still good to learn on. If you could find something like that, then get it. Otherwise, download a free dos C++ compiler and find a free tutorial online. There are many. You could also buy a book on it from borders, amazon, whatever. Whatever you do though, don't go ahead and buy the latest version of borland/visual c++ for $200+ only to find you hate it. Once you feel you've figured it out from the free/cheap compiler and free tutorial/book, then buy. You could also check this out: http://webster.cs.ucr.edu/Page_asm/ArtOfAsm.html You can download a very complete assembly textbook in PDF format. There are two, one for DOS, and one for Win32. That will teach you some very good programming habbits. Though I don't know if you want to start with that.

To tell you the truth, all I know is Basic and some C++, but I'd like to learn more. I just don't really have the time. I wish you luck
