Visual Basic

There's www.cprogramming.com for learning C on the net

How about learning Visual Basic on the net? I'm thinking of starting here then moving onto Visual C

Thanks,

Do you want to learn Visual Basic or Visual C++? Because they're two different languages.

Plenty of VB tutorials listed here. I personally would just stick to C++ and/or Visual C++, it's a better language than VB in my opinion.

You can learn a lot about visual basic at www.vb-world.net if you still want to learn it, and for vb API you can look at www.vbapi.com. HTH

VISUAL BASIC 6.0

I personally program in visual basic and its very similar to java script but the reson i learned visual basic is when i signed up for programing i thought we were going to learn c++ but in disapointment we didnt i stuck with the class just to get the feel of it. C++ is more reconized and has more manovrability. I would go with C++

I think that you can start learning C++, no need for learning VB, VB will teach you bad programming habits.

I really don't know much about visual basic but I do know that I have talked to a lot of people and when they hire, they ask for VB. Right now I'm in a java class and I will go on to learn c++ and VB both.

That's like saying "Hammers will teach you how to smash your thumb."

It ain't the tool. It's how you use it.

I'd have to disagree with aym_7 on that one. Visual Basic is a good place to start since it's quite simple to learn and can be very powerful. It teaches good logic and can help beginners step into other languages. Yes, VB is not a true Object Oriented Language (the whole inheritance thing..), but it doesn't teach bad habits in anyway. I mean, you dont see VB programs filled with GOTO statements. Now that is bad programming.

I also disagree with aym_7. While VB isn't as robust as C++, nor is it a true Object Oriented Language, VB lets you quickly get a GUI up and running. As long as you understand the limitations of VB, and why you can't do things with it that you can do with a true OOL. Learn the structure and limitations of the language and you will be better off; that goes for just about any language.

HackinCowboy:

Not dead, perhaps just dormant/sleeping

The comments are valued by the way, I am starting out with PHP but I had a VERY small amount of C++ experience before (first few hours of a teach yourself book) and I'm wondering why I quit C++ in the first place (as I thought it was 'too difficult') as they are almost identical apart from you type one in notepad and one in MSDev

compiler

I am trying to sign myself up for a course on learning VB. that means approx £250 sterling for the course and who knows how much for the compiler!! What about C++? Do we have to pay lots for the compiler for that too?

Many learning books come with compilers and such for Visual Basic and C++.
You can also go here for a free C++ Compiler.
