HTML simple stuff.Help wanted.

I was wanderin how you got those little menus on the side of the screen to work on a web page..you know the ones which have parent directories and then when you click on that it opens the page and low and behold more options open under that folder..like a whole file structure and you can see exactly where you are...also...some person told me using layers in my site wasnt a good idea as some browsers didnt support it..is this true at all or shall i go ahead and use em.
